Choking Gas is a rune effect in Smoke Screen, a Discipline-spending stealth and escape Demon Hunter skill.

This rune effect creates a cloud of choking gas where the Demon Hunter was standing when the skill was triggered. It lingers for 5 seconds, dealing 70% weapon damage per seocnd to any enemy in the area.

Poison damage in Diablo III isn't any different than the other types of damage, with no more lingering effects, so the cloud only damages as long as a monster is in it. And the enemies are unlikely to remain long in the vicinity when the Demon Hunter reappears, some distance away.
