Emeralds is generally the most popular gem to socket into a weapon in the [[end game]], since well-geared characters, especially those with high Critical hit Chance, get the most benefit out of raising their Critical hit Damage.  Emeralds are much less useful in weapons for lower level or poorly-geared characters who do not have at least 25% ChC.

Emeralds are also used by Monks and Demon Hunters to boost their dexterity and damage in armor.  Helms are the only non-viable socketing option for Emeralds, since almost every player feels that there are many better choices to fill the hole in their head. It has often been suggested that the Emerald in helm bonus be doubled or tripled (or more) to make that a more viable option.

Emeralds are the only Diablo III gem which we know the stats for, thanks to one's appearance in the Artisan introductory movie, in August 2010.

There are 14 levels of gems in Diablo III. Nothing is yet known of the bonuses higher gems will provide, but most fans assume they will grow to very impressive levels, given how difficult and time-consuming it will be to upgrade a gem past level 10.

The only recently confirmed stat is from a normal (level 3) [[Emerald]], as seen in the [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNP8QiNbFmU Gamescom 2010 Artisan video]. That gem granted:

* Weapon: +4% Casting Speed.

* Helms: Attackers take 7 damage.

* Other: +7 dexterity

In the Diablo 2 expansion, a level 3 emerald grants:

* Weapons: 17 poison damage over 1 second

* Armor & Helms: +6 dexterity.

* Shields: +22% Poison Resistance

** Clvl 12 required for all

The numerical bonuses (but not the type of bonus) from gems changed from D2C to D2X, but clearly there are major differences in more than the numbers. Diablo 3 grants entirely different types of bonuses, and categorizes the socketable items differently as well.

Emeralds are one of the five types of gems found in Diablo III. The others are Amethyst, Ruby, Topaz, and Diamonds, the last added in Patch 2.0.1 and Reaper of Souls. See the main gems article for full details about gem scarcity, upgrade recipes, strategy, and more.

Emeralds boost Dexterity when socketed in armor, add Critical hit Damage in weapons, and Gold Find in helm.

Emeralds is generally the most popular gem to socket into a weapon in the end game, since well-geared characters, especially those with high Critical hit Chance, get the most benefit out of raising their Critical hit Damage.

Emerald Changes[edit | edit source]

During the Beta test, Emeralds boosted Magic Find in helms. This bonus was switched back to Topaz (as it was in Diablo 2) before Diablo 3's release and Emeralds became the helm Gold Find gem.
