Sources (formerly Orbs) are Wizard-specific items found in Diablo III. Sources are equipped in the off hand, like shields, but they do not have defensive bonuses and can not be used to block with. They come in a variety of graphics (usually crystal balls, but also books, as seen in the beta), and are simply items with bonus stats, usually to offense or general bonuses. Using a Source is essentially a way for a Wizard to dual-wield Caster Weapons, at the cost of whatever defensive bonuses she might have obtained from using a shield.

As blocking is much less useful a defensive property in Diablo III than it was in Diablo II, using a Source in the off hand, purely for the offensive bonuses, is not such a damaging trade off, since the shield wouldn't have done all that much good anyway. Sources are akin to the Necromancer's totems, and add similar bonus properties.

There has been no confirmation if they can be found with Sockets in or if the Blacksmith can place a socket in as with other off-hand weapons.

Are you looking for information on Sources of information used in DiabloWiki.Net?

Books are one graphic of Sources.

Sources (formerly Orbs) are Wizard-restricted items found in Diablo III and Reaper of Souls. Sources are equipped in the off hand and are roughly-equivalent to the Witch Doctor's Mojos or the Demon Hunter's Quivers.

Sources are offensive objects, which add damage and may boost other offensive stats, the most valuable of which is Critical hit Chance. They are not akin to shields, and do not provide any blocking or other defensive stats like Armor or Resistance.

Legendary Sources[edit | edit source]

The complete list as of Patch 2.0.5, Reaper of Souls.

Legendary Orbs (or "Sources") in Diablo 3 and Reaper of Souls. All these items can be used only by the Wizard in the off-hand slot. See the individual articles for full stats and details on these weapons.

 • Items of level 61 and higher can only be found in Reaper of Souls.

Source Visuals[edit | edit source]

The Wizard is seen holding a Source in her cinematic introduction movie and Sources can also be discerned in several in-game screenshots. Sources are quite varied in appearance, ranging from "crystal ball" type glowing orbs to books, spiky balls, large eyeballs, three rotating balls, and more. Several examples can be seen in the screnshots below.
