Mitigation generally refers to the lessening of damage by armor or resistances in Diablo 3. The term is usually used as "damage mitigation."

This is a basic function of the overhauled combat engine in Diablo 3. Unlike Diablo 2, where defense was mostly about blocking and high armor lessening to/hit, attacks almost always hit in Diablo 3. The key to survival then is to lessen the damage taken by physical or elemental attacks, and this function is called "damage mitigation."

Higher armor means that all attacks are less likely to hit. Individual types of damage are reduced by individual resistances, which include physical, fire, lightning, poison, holy, arcane, cold, and others.

In game, hover over the resistance or armor figures on your character's interface to see the exact percentage of your damage mitigation.
