Lazarus was actually the Custodian of Mephisto's Soulstone in Kurast before arriving in Khanduras. When King Leoric set up court in the abandoned monastery in Tristram, Diablo reached out and lured the Archbishop down in to the catacombs of the monastery to shatter the soulstone that imprisoned him.

Diablo tried to fully possess King Leoric but failed, so he ordered Lazarus to bring down the King's son, Albrecht, into the labyrinth as a mortal host for the Lord of Terror.

After the death of King Leoric, Lazarus emerged from the monastery and whipped the villagers into a frenzy to find Albrecht in a ruse to lead them right into the lair of the Butcher.

When the villagers had seen the horrors of this attempt to save Albrecht, Lazarus hid deep in the monastery labyrinth, where he remained. He was later defeated by an unnamed hero, who later became the new mortal host for the Lord of Terror.

Lore[edit | edit source]

Lazarus in Diablo Games[edit | edit source]

His staff, the Spire of Lazarus and the dagger Wizardspike (sometimes dropped upon his defeat), are both unique items in Diablo II, although Lazarus's staff was not able to be wielded in the first game, serving only as a key to the cathedral's tower where Lazarus resided.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

Lazarus is possibly inspired by Lazarus of Bethany, who was brought back to life four days after his death. Either because there is some dispute whether he is undead or not, or that it's a religious name, and the Zakarum was originally based primarily on Christianity.
