Item hunting is the biggest joy in playing the Diablo games for many players. The item system in Diablo III is bigger and better, but it's a refinement on the system used in Diablo II, not a radical change.

Items come in three large categories: Armor, Weapon, and Other

Armor

Armor refers to any non-held equipment. Most of them provide Mainstat, Vitality and other defensive bonuses.

There are 11 total armor slots:

  • Head
  • Torso
  • Waist
  • Shoulders
  • Wrists
  • Hands
  • Legs
  • Feet
  • Rings (2 slots)
  • Amulets

Weapons

Weapons include anything held in the hand, even if they player doesn't hit monsters with it.

One-Handed Two-Handed
Axes Axes
Maces Maces
Swords Swords
Spears Polearms
Daggers Staves
Shields Bows
Crossbows

Class Restrictions

All classes can use all types of armor, although most classes have a special type for one of the slots. Weapons are restricted by class and each class has at least one special weapon type.

Barbarian

Barbarians have Mighty Belts and Mighty Weapons, both one-handed and two-handed melee weapons.

Barbarians can't wield Staves, Bows or Crossbows, but can dual wield all one-handed weapons.

Crusader

Crusaders have special Crusader Shields and Flails, both one and two-handed. They also have skills that require the use of a shield.

Crusaders can't wield Staves, Bows or Crossbows.

Demon Hunter

Demon Hunters have Cloaks for the Torso Slot, as well one-handed Hand Crossbows and Quivers for the off hand. Not using a bow or crossbow limits the Demon Hunter's choices.

Demon Hunters can't wield any 2-handed weapon except Bows and Crossbows

Monks

Monks have Spirit Stones for the Head slot, as well as one-handed fist weapons and two-handed Daibos.

Monks can't use Bows or Crossbows but can dual wield all one-handed weapons.

Witch Doctor

Witch Doctors have Voodoo Masks for the head slot, as well as one-handed Ceremonial Knives and Mojos for the off hand.

Witch Doctors can't wield Polearms or 2-handed Maces.

Wizard

Wizards have Wizard Hats, as well as one-handed wands and Orbs for the off hand.

Wizards can't wield Polearms or 2-handed Maces.
