Rubies are one of the four five types of gems found in Diablo III. The others are Amethyst, Emerald, Topaz, and Diamonds, the last added in Patch 2.0.1 and Reaper of Souls. See the main gems article for full details about gem scarcity, upgrade recipes, strategy, and more.
Rubies are very useful socketed provide a variety of bonuses, adding % Experience gain in weaponshelms, especially since the Patch 1.0.7 buffed their +damage. Strength is the damage added by the Ruby was very substantial. Rubies were not as useful mainstat for high level characters, since with better gear and increased Critical hit ChanceBarbarian stats, the Emerald with its s and Critical hit DamageCrusader bonus was much more powerful than s and those classes often stick Rubies into their armor for the boost to damage and the Rubysecondary benefit of raising their Armor.
Rubies are coveted by BarbariansAs of D3v2 and Reaper of Souls, since a Ruby is the +Strength bonus adds to their damage outputbest option for a weapon socket for any low level or poorly-geared character.  Rubies are also very popular for In the +%experience gain when socketed in helmsend game more players choose Emeralds to raise Critical hit Damage, but this is only valuable to characters who have a good Critical hit Chance value. This bonus became much more popular after Prior to Patch 1.0.47 when the Paragon system was introduced and gaining experience from kills became a key preoccupation of level 60+ charactersRubies were much less useful in weapons, but that patch buffed their damage considerably.
