Whimsyshire is the Diablo III Secret Level, a humorous area that's a direct homage to the Diablo II Secret Cow Level. It requires the Staff of Herding to enter, a special object that can only be assembled from multiple legendary materials and a special crafting recipe.

Patch 2.1 for the PC/Mac and UEE added rare rainbow goblins who appear randomly throughout the game and when dying will sometimes open a portal to "Whimsydale." This area is identical to Whimsyshire, with a different name for technical reasons. This makes the rainbow special land more accessible for players who don't care enough to farm up the required legendary materials, such as Seasonal characters.
Secret Level?
This area was a complete secret during Diablo 3's development, though fans were not that surprised to see it when it was first found shortly after launch, since it was clearly evolved from the Diablo 2 secret cow level + the Diablo 3 "too colorful" art controversy.

Reaper of Souls desegregated Whimsyshire via Nephalem Rifts. In those randomly-generated Rifts it is possible to get the cute Whimsyshire monsters in normal game tilesets, and/or normal game monsters in the Whimsyshire tileset.

It is also possible to get the Whimsyshire layout in a Rift, with normal monsters from elsewhere in the game. They tend to look very odd on the cartoonish rainbow level, if it spawns without a palette-shift.

Patch 2.1 increased access to this secret level with the introduction of rare Rainbow Treasure Goblins who sometimes open up portals to Whimsydale.
* These rainbow goblins and their portals are similar to the Patch 2.1 addition of Greed's Domain, reached via yellow portals from treasure goblins.
* Rainbow goblins have been sold as a merchandise item, and the in-game versions are exactly modeled on the plushies. (Not just rainbow-colored versions of normal Treasure Goblins.
</gallery>

Whimsyshire Overview
The secret level is a fully-playable area of the game. There are monsters (cute ones), gold and item drops, health orbs (which look like giant pink cupcakes), random Elites and purple Unique monsters, and even an amazing, baby's-blanket looking minimap.

Though the area is accessed through Act One, prior to the difficulty scaling introduced in D3v2, the difficulty of Whimsyshire was equivalent to late Act Four, and players were initially able to use it for end game farming.

This secret level was a popular farming target early in Diablo 3 vanilla, leading the developers to nerf it in terms of rewards. They wanted Whimsyshire to be a fun place to visit once in a while, but not a major farming goal, as Diablo 2's Secret Cow Level was.

How to Enter
To gain access to Whimsyshire in the PC/Mac version requires five special ingredients, and a Plan to teach the Blacksmith how to craft them into the Staff of Herding. Once players have created a Staff of Herding they must carry it in their inventory to the Cow King's Ghost, who rises up from a cow skeleton found on the Old Tristram Road, near the pit glowing with a mysterious red light.

After the Cow King's Ghost conversation, the glow from the pit changes to a rainbow color and it becomes a clickable dungeon entrance. As was the case with the Diablo II Secret Cow Level, characters must have defeated that difficulty level to enter the secret level.

In D3v there were four types of Staff of Herding, corresponding to Normal, Nightmare, Hell, and Inferno difficulty levels. That system was simplified in D3v2 and currently there is only one Staff of Herding, with the monsters in Whimsyshire scaling to the player's level, as do all other monsters in the game.

Rainbow Portals
Patch 2.1 added special ultra-rare Rainbow Goblins, who will sometimes leave a rainbow portal open when they die. Players can use this to enter Whimsydale, even if they have never crafted a Staff of Herding.

Diablo 3 Console Differences
Whimsyshire works just the same for the Diablo 3 console, but the materials required to gain entrance are different. Leoric's Shinbone and the Liquid Rainbow are not found in the console version and are not required to create the Staff of Herding.

Blizzard has not given an explanation for this simplification.

Required Ingredients
Staff of herding

Items found in Whimsyshire
Monsters in the secret level drop just like any other monsters in the game. Prior to the difficulty-scaling added in D3v2 the monsters in Whimsydale were equivalent to Act Four, making them considerably higher level than any enemies in Act One.

There are a number of special features and visuals in Whimsyshire, most of them clickbles:
* Presents - Often empty, seem to have less of a drop rate for items than chests.
* Pot o' Gold - A golden pot that, when clicked, drops gold and possibly other items.
* Smiling Couds - When clicked on, your character does an animation that appears to be a fist bump to the air above your head, and the clouds drop items and bounce with bigger smiles on their faces. They also giggle.
* Pinata - the Whimsyshire version of a Resplendent Chest, this Diablo pinata is found hanging from a tree in one random corner of the map.

Legendary Materials
For a time in Reaper of Souls, two types of Legendary Material could *only* be found from purples in Whimsyshire. The entire Legendary Material system was removed from the game in Patch 2.0.5 and while these monsters remain in the game, they will no longer drop special Legendary Materials.

* The Eternal Power Capsule was required to craft the Arcane Barb crossbow and could only be dropped by Evil Oliver, a Cuddle Bear.
* The Mystical Source was required to craft items from the Sage's Journey Item Set, and could only be dropped by Creampuff, Midnight Sparkle, Nightmarity or the four Members of Team Unicorn: Miss Hell, R'Lyeh, Killaire and Maulin Sorely.

Monsters
There are several special monster types found in Whimsyshire that never appear elsewhere in the game (except randomly and rarely in Rifts). They are appropriately cute and cuddly in appearance, but fight like any other deadly enemy and can be quite dangerous. They also have especially gory and bloody death animations, to contrast humorously with their cute appearance.

* Twinkleroot - Killer flowers on a rampage. Do not underestimate them. They cannot be knocked back and have no special animation on death.
* Cuddle Bear - Pink teddy bears, also out to kill you. They die in a much messier way than a Twinkleroot.
* Chubby Pink/Purple Unicorns - Unicorns, typically pink but also occurring in purple, that charge and attempt to trample you. They are the largest beings in Whimsyshire, and are also the messiest when they die.

All these... horrors can spawn in elite packs. There are a few special unique bosses that can spawn that are similar in function to most other random purple-named monsters in the game.

Whimsyshire's Music
The music played in the level is a famous piece of classical music for the piano, Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit - Le Gibet. (Video of that composition here.) This was first revealed in the following video; the backwards playing begins around the 0:38 mark.

ZoLatKam: /* Hallowed Protectors Set Bonuses */

PAGENAME are a set of items with a required character level of 70 and are only available in the expansion pack, Reaper of Souls. The set is comprised of seven pieces, six weapons and a shield, and at most two can be equipped at a time. (All classes can equip one weapon and the shield, and the Monk and Barbarian can dual-wield their class weapon and the axe.) These items must be crafted by the Blacksmith after he has learned the level 12 Plan: Hallowed Protectors. None of these items can drop as loot.

Each item in this crafted set is almost completely random each time it is created, with all 6 modifiers (3 primary and 2 secondary) chosen at random. All the weapons have inherent holy damage, and the shield has an inherent bonus to increase skills that use Holy Damage, though there are very few skills that use that damage type, mostly limited to the Crusader. The Smart Loot system seems to be set to 100% on crafting set items, with the mainstat and skill bonuses always tuned to the class of the character who crafts the item.

The main attraction to creating items from this and from the other level 70 sets is to obtain the partial set bonuses on top of the legendary quality item rolls. Well-geared players mix and match multiple sets to stack up the best possible bonuses spread across all of their equipment, and incorporate the Ring of Royal Grandeur as well.

Required Level: 70
Utar's Roar is a crafted legendary axe that can only be created in Reaper of Souls. After patch 2.0.6 this item no longer requires Frozen Blood or any other legendary material to craft.

To create this item, find the Plan: Utar's Roar, which can be randomly dropped randomly by any level 70 target, and teach the plan to the Blacksmith. Once learned by the smith, any character on your account can make as many of these as you can afford to create.

Utar's Roar properties
This axe has no legendary affix but a very powerful bonus to boost damage to cold skills, and with that and a good roll it can be as good as any end game item for a character specializing in cold skills.
Crafting
Once a player finds the randomly-dropped plan and teaches it to the Blacksmith, the item can be created by any character on that account. This item always has a lvl 70 requirement, no matter what level character crafts it. The Smart Loot system means that this item will usually roll with a mainstat and/or +skill damage bonus appropriate to the class of the character that creates it.

Crafting Costs:
* 64,800 Gold
* 40 Reusable Parts
* 30 Veiled Crystal
* 4 Deaths Breath
* 2 Forgotten Soul

Patch 2.0.6 controversially removed Legendary Materials, which changed the crafting costs for every level 70 RoS recipe. Prior to that patch Utar's Roar required 1 Frozen Blood and 0 Deaths Breath.
The required legendary material, Frozen Blood drops only from Chiltara, a Unique Lacuni huntress located in the Caverns of Frost in Act Three. This material was extremely difficult to find in the months after [{Reaper of Souls]] release due to a bug making Chiltara spawn very rarely. This also made it almost impossible to create a Staff of Herding to access the Whimsyshire secret level since Chiltara is the only drop source for the Gibbering Gemstone.

Legendary Gems (or LGems or LeGems) were added to Reaper of Souls in Patch 2.1, after extensive testing on the PTR. There are 14 types of Legendary Gems, all of which add a special bonus when socketed in rings and amulets. The value of the bonus increases with each rank the gem is upgraded, up to a maximum of 25, and at that level a special secondary power is unlocked.

While the developers are calling them "legendary gems" these socketables have nothing in common with regular gems in stats or appearance, and are more analogous to the Unique_Jewels Rainbow Facet unique jewels of Diablo 2. The main difference in Diablo 3 is that these gems can only be socketed in jewelry, and the way the gems can be upgraded to improve their functions over time.

Rules of Drop and Use
Legendary Gems:

* Are dropped only at rank 0 and only by Greater Rift Guardians, the final boss found in a Greater Rift.
* LGems drop quite commonly, but players will never find two of the same type of legendary gem if they have one already on that character or in their stash.
** To find more than one of the same gem, you need to put the first gem on another character.
** This is actually a benefit to players seeking a specific gem, since holding the other types you won't find any duplicates.
* LGems can only be socketed into rings and amulets. Not any other item types.
* LGems only work when equipped on players. Do not function when equipped on followers.
* Can only be upgraded with Urshi, the NPC who appears only in Greater Rifts.
** Upgrade odds are entirely based on the level of the Greater Rift and the level of the gem.
** If the level of the Grift is more than 10 higher than the rank of the LGem, the odds are 100%. If the Grift is more than 7 levels lower than the gem, the odds are 0%. Full odds listed below.

Upgrade Odds
Upgrade odds are determined entirely by the difference in level between the Greater Rift in which Urshi appears, and the rank of the greater gem. If the level of the Greater Rift is higher than that of the gem, the odds of the gem gaining a rank are increased. If the level of the Greater Rift is lower than the gem, the odds decrease rapidly.

+8
+7
+6
-3
-4
-5
-6
-7
100%
90%
60%
30%
15%
8%
4%
2%
1%
0%

Examples:
* GRift level 17, LGem level 5 = +12 = 100% chance of successful upgrade.
* GRift level 22, LGem level 14 = +8 = 80% chance of successful upgrade.
* Grift level 22, LGem level 24 = -2 = 15% chance of successful upgrade.

After players kill the Greater Rift Guardian they can use Urshi's interface to either upgrade the GRK (which will go up at least 1 level, and possibly more if they had a very fast run), or to upgrade a Legendary Gem. One or the other, but not both, so when players choose to upgrade a LGem, they can not upgrade a GRK and continue escalating that series of Greater Rifts.

Gems initially had 50 ranks, with the odds to upgrade increasing on higher Greater Rift levels. This was reworked after a few weeks, and a patch on August 5, 2014 changed the maximum level from 50 to 200 and greatly increased the odds for multiple rank boosts per upgrade, as well as granting multiple upgrade opportunities on higher level greater rifts.

<blue>Legendary gems now start at rank 0
* Changes have been made to the frequency at which Legendary gems are upgraded
** Note: Because of this change the power of each upgrade has been reduced, but the overall rate at which gem power is gained through upgrades should remain roughly the same</blue>

That system was changed again late in the PTR, with the ranks cut from 200 to 25, and a whole new system of upgrade odds implemented, based on the difference in level between the gem and the Grift. Those odds were the final system which went live a few weeks later.

Legendary Gem Design Theory
Blizzard's John Yang explained the design theory behind Legendary Gems while they were being tested on the PTR, July 15, 2014.

<blue>Hi everyone. I wanted to pop in here while discussion on Legendary gems is ongoing.
<br>
First off, our philosophy on Legendary gems is that, when you pick one up for the first time, you should immediately want to use it, assuming it’s for your build, since some gems don’t apply to all builds/needs. This puts a minimum bar on the starting power level. After that, the power increase per upgrade is directly related to the frequency of upgrading, which is closely tied to the Greater Rift reward scheme and is still being iterated on. In the end, we’d like gems to be infinitely upgradeable when it makes sense, but not be outrageous.

Additionally, all Legendary gems have been disabled for followers. These powers were not designed for followers in mind, and this way we can ensure the gems are of a high power level because you can only have 3 equipped. In the future, if followers need avenues of advancement we would likely make Legendary gems specifically designed for them.

Now for the details. The existing stats you see on Legendary gems on the PTR today are somewhat placeholder. So, to steer further discussion in a direction that’s more in line with the next PTR build, here are the freshly tuned numbers (with some of my notes) for each gem.</blue>

Official Reveal
Legendary Gems were first revealed in June 2014 and the first official info came from Blizzard's Patch 2.1 preview blog.

<blue>Legendary Gems are still undergoing significant iteration at this time, so you won’t see them available on the PTR right away. The gist is that these gems are infinitely upgradeable, and provide special Legendary powers when socketed into the appropriate gear slot.

They can only be socketed into Rings and Amulets, and can be upgraded by completing additional Greater Rifts. The higher you place in a Greater Rift, the more likely your gem will be successfully upgraded. We’ll have more details in the future as we continue development on these powerful baubles, so stay tuned!</blue>
Legacy Version
Legendary items (including Item Sets) found prior to Patch 1.0.4's big item buff are called legacy items. These generally have much lower stats and bonuses than current versions of those same items. Legacy and current sets do not generate partial set bonuses when equipped together, and legacy set items have different names so players can keep them straight.

The legacy version of this set was called Inna's Majesty and contained the following items:
* Inna's Blessing (Belt) (db)
