Uldyssian, son of Diomedes, is the main character from The Sin War Trilogy written by Richard A. Knaak.

Uldyssian was a farmer who discovers his amazing abilities while some strange events unfold in his home village of Seram. Two traveling missionaries, one belonging to the Cathedral of Light and one belonging to Temple of Triune are brutally murdered, and while Uldyssian had nothing to do with it, one of the victims was found with Uldyssian's knife as the murder weapon. Uldyssian is put into prison, and just at the moment when he so desperately wants to get out, the prison cell's door unlocks and opens all by itself.

Later, when the Master Inquisitor of the Cathedral of Light arrives and is about to declare Uldyssian guilty for the two murders, a bolt of lightning conveniently strikes at the Inquisitor and kills him. As a vicious storm quickly rises, the Cathedral guards attempt to capture Uldyssian, and in his defense he uses his new found powers to kill them all. To the townspeople, this proves Uldyssian's guilt at being a murderer and so everyone - even his lifetime friends in the village - reject him from their lives.

Uldyssian, his brother Mendeln, his two friends Serenthia and Achilios, and a mysterious woman named Lylia (who was actually Lilith in disguise) flee from Seram. In truth, it was actually Lilith who raised the storm, killed the Inquisitor and awakened Uldyssian's abilities.

The son of Mephisto, Lord of Hatred. Brother to Lilith, which goes by many names. In ages past, several hundreds of years before the events of Diablo I when Sanctuary was still a relative young world, Lucion ruled the Triune in the guise of the Primus. As the leader of the Triune, Lucion fought a secretive and subtle war against the Cathedral of Light that would decide which of the two cults would eventually dominate the human race.
Lucion's plans were eventually thwarted by Uldyssian and his Nephalem followers. Lucion stars in the first of the The Sin War Trilogy by Richard A. Knaak : Birthright.

Some time after the creation of Sanctuary by the renegade angel, Inarius, the world was discovered by the Burning Hells. Realizing that a full scale invasion would inevitably draw attention of the High Heavens (which would very likely result in a heavy struggle that would devastate Sanctuary, rendering it useless to either side), the Lords of the Burning Hells opted for a more subtle approach. They devised a cult that would gradually lure its followers deeper into the darkness. Which at first seemed a harmless, peaceful cult turned out to be a dark, unholy sect devoted to the three Prime Evils. At the head of this cult stood the Primus, the pontifex maximus. However, the Primus was nothing but a façade, a disguise used by the demon Lucion.

The Triune soon grew to become one of the dominating cults of Sanctuary, being second only to the Cathedral of Light, the counter-sect led by Inarius in his guise of the Veiled Prophet. The two sects continued to vie for control over the human race but without any open warfare, as it would draw unwanted attention. Instead, Lucion and Inarius plotted against each other through subtle scheming, always anticipating their opponent's moves.

Their subtle plans were disturbed by the sudden reappearance of Lilith, a renegade demoness who had her own goals and plans. In the guise of the fugitive noblewoman Lylia, Lilith sought to awake the special powers of the humans (who were in fact the offspring of pairs of renegade angels and demons), harbouring it for her own goals. Her unwitting champion was to be Uldyssian, a simple farmer from the lands near Seram. Noticing Uldyssian due to his immense powers (after it was used to the detriment of several travelling missionaries) and quickly seeing his potential, Lucion dispatched his trusted lieutenant, the high-priest Malic to capture the farmer and his companions. However, unaware of Lilith's presence, the raiding party was overwhelmed and utterly destroyed, sending Malic back fleeing to Lucion. Realizing his sister could have returned, Lucion 'blessed' his failing lieutenant with a demon limb, allowing him to remove Lilith's guise.

After a second and much more powerful raiding party consisting of many undead morlu attacked Uldyssian and his followers near the town of Partha, but failed again (this time leaving Malic dead by the hands of Lilith), Uldyssian decided to leave the town, after seeing the onslaught. Lilith followed him, still in the guise of Lylia, but soon after their reunion Lucion's spell took effect, revealing Lilith's true form to a horrified Uldyssian. Lilith easily defeated the farmer, leaving him severely wounded. Still, Uldyssian recovered and reunited with his companions, setting out for the jungles of Toraja.

It was here that Lucion personally intervened. Disguised as a white stallion, the demon tried to lure Uldyssian with him but the latter was timely warned by his brother, Mendeln. Once again taking the form of the Primus, Lucion sought one more time to persuade the farmer to join him. After both attempts failed and Uldyssian and his gathering followers started attacking the demon, Lucion changed tactics. With relative ease the demon incinerated many of Uldyssian's followers and caused the latter's close friend Achillios to die by one of his own enchanted arrows. After seeing his comrade and followers die, Uldyssian's true powers awoke as he burst out in rage. Being unable to maintain his position, Lucion finally revealed his true form: a horrid, reptilian demon with hooved legs and three tails, covered in thick scales. But even as a mighty demon, Lucion turned out to be overpowered by the sheer force of Uldyssian's abilities. As a last desperate act the demon even offered his obedience and subservience to the farmer, but all for naught. Instead of killing the demon, Uldyssian simply imagined the demon to be nothing, and so the great Lucion faded away and disappeared.

It is unknown what exactly became of Lucion. Though the books are clear on the fact that he was not 'killed' but simply 'was no more', it is never explained what that meant. It could very well be that Lucion was simply banished back into the Burning Hells where he would have to answer to his father Mephisto or maybe Uldyssian's awesome display of force even banished Lucion to a plane beyond the reach of both Heaven and Hell.

Mephisto was the first Prime Evil to be captured, and his stone was buried in a vault beneath the Temple of Light in Kurast. A third of the Horadrim stayed to guard this tomb until the remaining two Brothers were captured. Though the cost was high, all of The Three were eventually captured.

Mephisto finally managed to overcome the powers of the Soulstone that imprisoned him enough to influence and corrupt the local priesthood, known as the Zakarum. The Demon then had the priests work spells to shatter the Soulstone into seven shards, breaking the mystic seal and freeing the Lord of Hatred. Mephisto drove the six smaller shards into the left palms of six Zakarum archbishops who were then charged with bringing him nourishment in the form of human sacrifices while running their temple. The largest stone pierced the hand of the Que-Hegan, the highest divine authority of the Zakarum faith. It was this body that the Demon used as his manifestation on the mortal plane, warping the mortal’s form into an approximation of his true visage. For years, the corrupted religious leaders of the Zakarum have kept Mephisto supplied with information and misguided followers to carry out his plans of conquest. He eventually met up with Diablo, and the two began to work to enslaving the human race. However, Mephisto was later killed by the same adventurers (or adventurer) that would go on to kill Diablo. Mephisto's Soulstone was destroyed in the Hellforge after his defeat, ensuring his banishment from Sanctuary.

Mephisto is considered the most intensely evil brother of the three Prime Evils (and is also the oldest). So overwhelming is his evil that his malevolent influence can bring the dead back to life; these zombified beasts are filled with such anger for the living, that not even death can quench their desire for pain and suffering. Mephisto may also be viewed as the most intelligent and calculating. Over the years, after having ensorcelled the Zakarum, he used his newfound power to bring the lands of Sanctuary under his heel through the martial power of warped Paladins, and sent the Zakarum deep into Westmarch, where his unwitting servant, King Leoric, would take over Tristram.

Auriel
It is hinted that Mephisto and the Archangel Auriel may have once been lovers.

<blockquote>"'We like you, made false assumptions about this place, false assumptions about the creatures spawned by both our kind.' A blazing red eye materialized, then winked in the direction of Auriel, who utterly ignored it." (Mephisto, pg 332 of The Veiled Prophet)</blockquote>

Also, when the Kiss of Mephisto (also known as the 'Blood Marble' that resurrects the Morlu) is first mentioned, it is said that it was named 'Kiss of Mephisto' because it was originally a gift for someone else, other than Lucion. If Lucion doesn't approve of the 'kiss', then it doesn't seem to be the sort of kiss that a father gives to his son. Therefore, it also seems unlikely the type of kiss that is from a father to his daughter, so it is also unlikely that it is aimed at Lilith. If not Lilith or Lucion, then Mephisto must have been involved with someone else. Tying in with his wink at Auriel, it appears that Auriel was who the 'kiss' was targeted at.

<blockquote>"Turning his eyes back to the cataclysmic sight below, Lord Lucion gestured toward the very center, where the worst of the carnage had and was still taking place. In the midst of everything, a black gemstone nearly as large as a man sat embedded in a triangular column of red-streaked marble. “Blood marble,” it was named, naturally. The stone was called by Malic’s master the Kiss of Mephisto, although the cleric had, from past comments, reason to believe that it had once been named for another of whom Lord Lucion would not speak." (Birthright)</blockquote>

Lilith is the daughter of Mephisto, sister of Lucion, mother of Andariel and is believed to be Queen of the Succubi and matriarch of demons. After her legions of Succubi and strongest daughter Andariel were killed by mortals who successfully defended the Worldstone, Lilith swore to personally intervene. She masterminded the revival of Diablo by manifesting herself in the mortal realm and performing a ritual of Dark Summoning. This ritual, long thought to be impossible by the most powerful mortal wizards, allowed Lilith to link with Diablo across realms, strengthening him until he was finally able to once again reincarnate himself in the mortal plane. Rage and a deep yearning for revenge boiled within the eyes of the Lord of Terror, and together he and Lilith resurrected the two remaining Prime Evils as well as Duriel and Izual, two of their strongest agents.

Diablo announced his grand plan - the Three were finally strong enough to spread Pandemonium throughout Sanctuary. Lilith could have easily conducted an assault on her own, but because she had been left severely weakened by the Dark Summoning ritual, she agreed to aid the Prime Evils and command some of their remaining forces.

Lilith's role in Sanctuary's history is revealed far more in Richard A. Knaack's books the Sin War Trilogy. The daughter of Mephisto and the sister of Lucion, Lilith is a manipulator and seductress. Even very attractive in her demonic form her charms earned her the affection of powerful beings such as Inarius and the Sin War trilogy's protagonist Uldyssian , using them as pawns to further her own goals.

It is revealed that she along with other rogue demons and angels created Sanctuary. Her offspring with Inarius resulted with many of the Nephalem (angel and demon offspring) such as Rathma and generations later Uldyssian and Mendeln. Because Lilith desired to use the Nephalem as a powerful army, strong enough to challenge the Burning Hells and the High Heavens, she came into conflict with Inarius who wanted to eradicate the Nephalem. This resulted in Lilith killing off many if not all the rogue demons and angels that were with them. Her actions prevented Inarius from eradicating the Nephalem, but not her subsequent banishment.

She later returned still wishing to fulfil her ambitions during the events of the Sin War Trilogy. She weakened the power of the Worldstone that prevented the Nephalem from developing their powers. She then helped awaken Uldyssian's dormant power as Nephalem, tempting and manipulating him in her quest to gain a Nephalem army. She failed however, due to Uldyssian, who used the very powers that Lilith had helped awaken and the Nephalem army that Lilith desired against the demon. Inarius also played a part in her downfall, though hidden from Uldyssian and his companions and even Rathma. Lilith was then banished once again by Inarius.
Along with the creation of Sanctuary came the creation of the Worldstone (and Trag'Oul - though they are unaware of Trag'Ouls existance).

Inarius and Lilith were lovers, but now they hate each other.

They seem to have 'created' humans by means of some kind of partnership, because different Nephalem have different parents. Rathma was born of Inarius and Lilith, while Bul-Kathos is said to be born of a different pair of Angel and Demon. It is said that they don't have sex like humans do though, so we aren't sure how they 'mated' exactly.

The Nephalem, being born of both Angel and Demon, were found to be quite powerful. Lilith planned to use their power to build an army, but Inarius fought against her and used the Worldstone to diminish the humans' powers, so that each successive generation became less and less powerful. He wanted control over them, not anyone else.

Sanctuary was created as an escape from the Great Conflict, where it would be a paradise for the Angels and Demons to rest peacefully. So as not to draw attention to himself and Sanctuary from the High Heavens, Inarius disguised himself as The Prophet, leader of the Cathedral of Light. When Inarius is connected to the Worldstone, he is the most powerful being on Sanctuary.

However, Lilith awoke Uldyssians powers, but he turned against both Inarius and Lilith. Inarius fought Uldyssian, but Uldyssian ultimately won. Inarius was captured by the Angiris Council, who made a deal with Mephisto, where Mephisto agreed to leave Sanctuary alone if he could have Inarius to do as he pleases with him. Mephisto took Inarius back down to Hell to torture him. Mephisto has a special Hatred for Inarius.

In the original Diablo I manual, Inarius was only introduced as a means of explaining the origins of the Overlord demon encountered by the player in the Catacombs and Caves levels of the game. The angel left Heaven because of his pride, and built himself a temple. To prove his superiority he launched an ill-fated assault upon one of the temples of Mephisto and slew all his followers. Mephisto was greatly angered by Inarius's actions, and captured the angel and his followers. This is what it says in the Diablo I manual]:

He bound Inarius with tremendous chains and slowly tore the wings from the back of the angel. Great barbed hooks were then used to stretch out the once glowing skin and his features were distorted by vile powers. Many of the followers of Inarius were given as gifts to Baal and Diablo, but the rest were molded to match the bloated image of the now crippled angel. To this day, Inarius is said to be trapped in Hell within a chamber of mirrors, his eyelids torn from his face as he is forced to gaze upon his misshapen form for all eternity. His misguided followers now serve as Hell's taskmaster taking the anguish of their lost glory out upon the bodies of others.

With the coming of The Sin War Trilogy, this story changed to fit the expanding storyline. However, this led to several errors in the Diablo lore. For instance, Mephisto apparently turned Inarius and his followers into Overlords. But this doesn't quite make sense, because according to The Sin War Trilogy, Mephisto didn't take any of Inarius' followers, only Inarius.

Note: The Sin War is officially regarded as the most canonical, so the true nature of the Overlords is yet to be sorted out. But we can definitely say that Mephisto tortured Inarius.

Due to the memory wiping at the end of the Sin War Trilogy, later generations attribute the defeat of Inarius to Mephisto as retribution to the destruction of the Triune, which is in turn attributed to Inarius. Expanded role in books
Yet it is known that Inarius created the Worldstone to keep Sanctuary hidden from both the High Heavens and the legions of hell. Later he also imbued it with the power to weaken the Nephalem.

It is often speculated that Soulstones are fragments of the Worldstone, but this is yet to be proven. Tyrael originally gave the soulstones to the Horadrim in order to imprison the Prime Evils, but there is no official information concerning their origin.

Destruction of the Worldstone
Since Baal corrupted the Worldstone, Tyrael decided that it must be destroyed. The full effects of destroying the Worldstone is yet to be revealed. Many speculate that Tyrael has somehow been corrupted by Baal or the corrupted Worldstone. All should be revealed in Diablo III

Even the characters in Diablo II aren't sure of what will happen now that it is destroyed, or even if it had to be destroyed in the first place. The Prophecy stated that the Worldstone would be corrupted, but apparently never actually said anything about having to be destroyed.

Sandwiched between the Barbarian lands to the north and the vast deserts to the east lie the mountainous, verdant forestlands of the Western Kingdoms. The Western Kingdoms are comprised of the three regions: Entsteig, Khanduras, and Westmarch. The smaller, self-contained kingdoms contained herein have developed unique rules of protocol and etiquette, leading many to consider the Western Kingdoms as the most civilized of lands. Such exalted opinions stand in surprising contrast to the youthful age of the realm. While long a destination of merchants and peaceful travelers, recently infighting has made the Western Kingdoms a common destination for mercenaries and other, more sordid, visitors.

The Western Kingdoms are well known for their rich woodlands, a result of the area's nutrient laden soil, pleasant rainfall, and mild climate. From the massive pine and spruce, to the supple yew and ash, these woodlands are unequaled anywhere in Sanctuary. These abundant, fine-grained woods are forested for housing, farming tools, and weapons of warfare. The Sisters of the Sightless Eye, who make their homes within the provinces of Entsteig, are renowned for the bows that they fashion from these trees.

But as the shadows fall across all of Sanctuary, the Western Kingdoms too, are changing. The once familiar creatures that have inhabited these forests have become warped, aggressive versions of their natural forms. Woodsmen have spotted several of the following creatures, and have submitted their reports so that travelers and heroes alike may be better prepared to encounter these foul beasts.
:::: That's awesome! Well, for the most part you don't even need html, just adding links and stuff is good enough in most cases. Besides, an article with info in bad English is a LOT BETTER than an article that has no info at all ;) How do you find the "wiki language" with making links, bold text etc? Is the Help section of any use to you at all? --Leord 12:32, 24 October 2008 (CEST)
Your Edits
What are you talking about being bad with English? If it's your second language, and you don't live in a country with other English people like me, you're awesome with the additions! I understand if you copied some of it, but this is exactly what I was talking about! Make edits, and if you feel insecure, Shayagor or someone will go though it and fix the spelling, as they don't have time for much else. It's all about cooperation! ;) --Leord 13:03, 27 October 2008 (CET)
BTW, you should take a few seconds to write something on your user page. Something like what your name is on Diii.net, where you are from, and what your interests are. In truth, you can write anything there. Hey dude! Great start on the Tyrael stub. I added a little section so new users will have an idea of him and that none know where he is now =) Why are you talking about bad grammar? It was excellent, besides the fact that you need to use "Past Tense" (making the text talk about is as if it was in the past) =) You shouldn't worry to much about. What's your next project? =) --Leord 14:03, 3 November 2008 (CET)

Years after the last of the Horadrim had died, a great and prosperous society grew in the lands of the West. As time wore on, many Eastern pilgrims settled in the lands surrounding Khanduras and soon established small, self contained kingdoms. A few of these kingdoms bickered with Khanduras over holdings of property or routes of trade. These squabbles did little to upset the lasting peace of the West, and the great Northern kingdom of Westmarch proved to be a strong ally of Khanduras as the two lands steadily engaged in ventures of barter and commerce.

During this time, a bold, new religion of the Light known as Zakarum began to spread throughout the kingdom of Westmarch and into many of its northern principalities. Zakarum, founded in the Far East, implored followers to enter into the Light and forsake the darkness that lurked within their souls. The people of Westmarch adopted the statutes of Zakarum as their sacred mission in the world. Westmarch began to turn towards its neighbors, expecting them to embrace this new beginning? as well. Tensions rose between the kingdoms of Westmarch and Khanduras as the priests of Zakarum began to preach their foreign dogma whether they were welcomed or not.

It was then that the great northern lord Leoric came unto the lands of Khanduras and, in the name of Zakarum, declared himself King. Leoric was a deeply religious man and had brought many Knights and Priests with him that comprised his Order of the Light. Leoric and his trusted advisor, the Archbishop Lazarus, made their way to the city of Tristram. Leoric appropriated the ancient, decrepit Monastery on the outskirts of the town for his seat of power and renovated it to match its time-lost glory. Although the free people of Khanduras were not pleased with being placed under the sudden rule of a foreign King, Leoric served them with justice and might. Eventually, the people of Khanduras grew to respect the kind Leoric, sensing that he sought only to guide and protect them against the oppression of Darkness.
Known members include Tal Rasha, Jered Cain and Deckard Cain. Deckard Cain is the last of the Horadrim mages and is schooled in the most obscure lore and history of the arcane.

The Horadrim was formed from the three major mage clans in the East by the Archangel Tyrael who tasked the Magi with defeating the Three who were devastating the mortal realm. Tyrael gave the Horadrim three Soulstones which would be able to contain the demons once they had been defeated.

Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, was defeated and captured in Kehjistan, imprisoned beneath the Temple of Light in Kurast where the Zakarum monks were tasked with protecting the Soulstone.

Diablo and Baal escaped further west to Aranoch where Baal hid inside the city of Lut Gholein for three days. He then headed North into the desert a few miles before the Horadrim attacked him again. During the fight, one of Baal's attacks shattered the sacred Soulstone that was supposed to imprison him. The great mage Tal Rasha managed to subdue the Lord of Destruction, but the shattered stone could not contain the demon, so Tal Rasha sought to bind Baal within himself. Nor Tiraj, an Acolyte of the Horadrim, as well as the rest of the survivors imprisoned their leader within a tomb beneath the desert sands where his soul would wrestle with the demon for all eternity.

Jered Cain and the remaining Horadrim tracked Diablo further west to Khanduras, following the wake of terror that the demon spread as he went. After an epic battle, Diablo was imprisoned within the remaining Soulstone, and this was placed at the bottom of a large labyrinth within a cathedral in the town of Tristram.

The threat was gone and as time passed the Horadrim's numbers dwindled until only one remained, Deckard Cain, who remained at Tristram until Diablo came into the body of the Wanderer.

The Black King lay dead, slain at the hands of his own Priests and Knights. The young Prince Albrecht was still missing, and the proud defenders of Khanduras were no more. The people of Tristram looked about their lifeless town and were greatly dismayed. Awash in feelings of both relief and remorse, they soon realized that their troubles had merely begun. Strange, eerie lights appeared in the darkened windows of the Monastery. Misshapen, leathery-skinned creatures were seen venturing forth from the shadows of the church. Horrible, wounded cries seemed to linger on the wind, emanating from deep underground. It became apparent that something quite unnatural had infested the once holy sight?

Travelers on the roads surrounding Tristram were accosted by cloaked riders that seemed to now constantly roam the deserted countryside. Many villagers fled Tristram, making their way to other towns or kingdoms, fearing some unnamed evil that seemed to wait in the shadows all around them. Those few who chose to remain seldom ventured out at night, and never tread foot upon the grounds of the cursed Monastery. Whispered rumors of poor, innocent people being abducted in the night by wicked, nightmarish creatures filled the halls of the local inn. With no King, no law, and no army left to defend them, many of the townsfolk began to fear an attack from the things that now dwelt beneath their town.

The Arch-Bishop Lazarus, frayed and disheveled, returned from his absence and assured the townsfolk that he too had been ravaged by the growing evil of the Monastery. With their desperate need for reassurance clouding their good judgment, Lazarus whipped the townspeople into a frenzied mob. Reminding them that Prince Albrecht was still unaccounted for, he persuaded many of the men to follow him into the depths of the Monastery to search for the boy. They gathered torches and soon the night air glowed with the flickering light of hope. They armed themselves with shovels, picks and scythes and so prepared, they boldly followed the treacherous Arch-Bishop straight into the fiery maw of Hell itself?

The few who survived the horrible fate that awaited them returned to Tristram and recounted what they could of the ordeal. Their wounds were terrible, and even the skills of the healer could not save some of them. As the stories of demons and devils spread, a stifling, primal Terror began to consume the hearts of all of the town's inhabitants. It was a Terror that none of them had ever known?

Deep beneath the foundations of the ruined Monastery, Diablo gorged himself upon the fears of the mortals above him. He slowly sank back into the welcoming shadows and began to harness his depleted power.

He smiled to himself in the sheltering darkness, for he knew that the time of his final victory was fast approaching.

Zero80: /* Teleport */

An ongoing listing of Wizard skills, as seen on the Blizzard site and transcribed from footage during Blizzcon 2008 demo gameplay.

Storm Tree
Tier I Skills
Charged Bolt
Launch a volley of 3 electric bolts that deal 1-8 lightning damage each. Critical hits from lightning damage stun targets for 2 sec.
*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost 8

When tested in the BlizzCon 2008 build, the bolts seemed to come out with a wider spread than they do in Diablo II. They were useful to hit monsters to the sides as well as straight ahead, but were not as good to land multiple hits to a target straight ahead, either very close or a few yards distant.

Thunderstruck
Increases the critical hit chance of all lightning spells by 10%. Critical hits from lightning damage stun targets for 2 sec.
*Rank: 0/15

The spells did not display their Critical Hit % chance in the BlizzCon build, but it's assumed that they will in the final game. It's also a good bet that there will be items that boost critical chance from skills, as part of the D3 effort to provide a variety of valuable mods on weapons for non-combat characters.

Empowered Magic
Increases the effect of willpower on your spell damage by 20%.
*Rank: 0/15

Lightning Speed
Increases casting speed by 3%
*Rank: 0/15

It's not clear if this skill increases the casting speed for all spells cast by the Wizard, or just ones from this tree. From the wording, it sounds like it affects all of the character's spells. Nothing is yet known about spell casting speed boosts from items, but presumably they will be uncommon, or else this skill would be much less valuable.

Tier II Skills
Tier 2 skills do not require any amount of points to be spent in the tree to enable them. (There were rumors that 5 points were required, but that was not the case in the BlizzCon build.

Storm Armor
Surround yourself in electrical energy. Electrical bolts are automatically fired at attackers for 1 to 8 damage.
*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost: 15

This skill does not seem to offer any protection; just a sort of passive offensive attack. It's not known how long it persists for, or how much the damage will scale up.

Frost Nova
An explosion of ice pelts nearby enemies for 1-3 cold damage. Has an additional 25% chance of a critical hit. Critical hits from cold damage freeze targets.
*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost: 25
*Cooldown: 12 seconds

The long cooldown on this skill indicates that the D3 Team means it to be used as a sort of "panic button," rather than a killing attack. The boosted % of critical chance is more about potentially freezing enemies than killing them with a lovely explosion of ice. Storm Power and Lethal Energy will both add to this skill's lethality by adding to its critical strike chance and damage.

Deep Freeze
Increases the critical hit chance of all cold spells by 5%. Critical hits from cold damage freeze targets.
*Rank: 0/15

Rather than giving the Wizard a Glacial Spike-like instant freeze spell, the D3 team seems to be granting that possibility with critical hits on a variety of non-freezing cold spells.

Power Armor
Increases the damage dealt by your storm armor charged bolts by 10%.
*Rank: 0/15

Static Charge
Convert 5% of all damage taken into mana.
*Rank: 0/15

An interesting variation on Mana Shield; this sounds like it's only of use to add mana, without any protective properties.

Tier III Skills
A Wizard is required to spend 10 skill points in this skill tree before putting points into any of the skills at this tier.

Electrocute
Lightning arcs from the wizard’s fingertips towards enemies, electrocuting them for 4-5 damage. Electrocute affects up to 2 targets. Critical hits from lightning damage stun targets for 2 sec.
*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost: 8

This spell works like beam weapons in most FPS games, locking onto a target and bending to keep it in the lightning zone even as the enemy moves around. It can chain to a second target, and during the BlizzCon 2008 demonstration, this spell was seen upgraded with a multi-strike rune, enabling it to hit multiple targets at once. A Lethality Rune was also shown in conjunction with Electrocute, which caused some enemies to explode in an AoE electric Nova upon death, as they will also do when they die from a lightning critical hit.

Ray of Frost
Project a beam of cold energy that deals 6 cold damage per sec. Critical hits from cold damage freeze targets.
*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost: 16 mana per sec.

This skill is similar to the fire-based Disintegrate spell; however, it does not pass through targets or increase damage over time. This spell seems useful for freezing and keeping enemies at bay, adding to the Wizard's arsenal of offensive spells that double as insurance against melee creatures.

Static Residue
Enemies damaged by your lightning spells discharge an additional 1 to 3 lightning damage per sec to nearby enemies for 3 seconds.
*Rank: 0/15

An add on type of skill, this one does nothing by itself, but adds lightning damage that hits everything nearby, when any other lightning skill is used.

Lethal Energy
Increases the chance to score critical hits with melee and spell attacks by 5%.
*Rank: 0/15

As with other skills in the Wizard's tree (and those of the other characters), boosting Critical Hits is a very powerful technique in D3.

Improved Charged Bolt
Increase the number of bolts released by your charged bolt spell by 1.
*Rank: 0/15

This one was not seen at Blizzcon 2008, but it sounds like an interesting upgrade. It's unclear why anyone would put more than 1 point into regular Charged Bolt though, with this one waiting at a higher level. Also keep in mind that lightning critical hits stun enemies in D3, so imagine how effective this spell could be with a high level of critical adding damage and stunning the monsters as they bathe in the river of Charged Bolts flowing out from the Wizard.

Tier IV Skills
A wizard must invest 15 points elsewhere in this skill tree before enabling any skills from this tier.

Tornado
Summon a large tornado that damages everything in its path.
*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost: 15

Akin to the Druid's Twister skill from Diablo II, these tornadoes are formed from pure energy. In the gameplay trailer released at BlizzCon 2008, multiple tornadoes are cast one after another, each lasting for close to 5 seconds. Their path is semi-random, and they bounce off of enemies, heading in another direction when they hit once, instead of passing through in the same general direction, as the Druid's tornados do in D2.

As in DII with the Druid, the best use of the tornadoes will likely be multiple, concentrated casts in a small area packed with enemies, to ensure the most damage in the shortest period of time. Higher levels of the skill may increase their size or may simply increase raw damage. Epic Storm will increase the number of simultaneous tornadoes you can cast, and Lethal Energy will increase the chance to score critical strikes.

It's not clear what type of damage a tornado deals, so what bonuses the critical hits would deal is not known.

Blizzard
Call down shards of ice to pelt an area dealing 6-10 cold damage per sec for 3 sec. Critical hits from cold damage freezes targets.
*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost: 70

The mandatory spell, this one is visually improved in D3. There is now a cloud shown above the enemies, from which large chunks of ice crash down to earth.

Storm Power
Increase damage of all lightning and ice spells.
*Rank: 0/15

Epic Storms
Increases size of Blizzard and number of twisters you can have for your energy twister.
*Rank: 0/15

An interesting mastery skill, this one boosts two different spells (but not everything in the tree), though by now much remains to be seen.

Arcane Tree
Tier I
Magic Missile
Fire 1 missile(s) of energy at your enemies causing 7-13 arcane damage to them. Critical hits from arcane damage silence targets for 4 secs.
*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost: 8

Note: In early levels, Magic Missile might be the Wizard's bread and butter. In later levels, it might prove invaluable as a cheap and direct means of silencing a monster for 4 seconds -- plenty of time to dispatch of them before they can cast a nasty spell on you, or raise the fallen to fight again. The difficulty will be in hitting the shaman behind the minions, since Magic Missile will strike another monster if it's between the Wizard and the targeted boss.

Magic Missile's effectiveness is increased by a variety of spells, the most noteworthy of which is Improved Magic Missile, which increases both the damage and number of missiles released on a cast. The range and spread of higher levels of Magic Missile is reminiscent of the DII Necromancer's Teeth. When an enemy dies at the hands of an Arcane spell, a purple glow is left on the corpses.

Arcane Power
Increases all arcane damage dealt by 24%.
*Rank: 0/15
*Next Rank: Increase Arcane damage dealt by 36%

This mastery boosts the arcane spell damages by a much higher % than similar masteries for other types of damage, and it's unclear why. Arcane spells generally do less damage, or their critical hit bonus might be less useful, or the spell just might be overpowered in this early, still-under-testing build.

Efficient Magics
Lowers the mana cost of spells by 6%.
*Rank: 0/15
*Next Rank: lower mana cost by by 9%

It looks like a Wizard will be able to greatly customize his or her spells in D3, with passive skills that cut mana cost, increase casting speed, and boost individual damage types. It's not yet known how much equipment will overlap with these abilities; a spell to boost casting speed wouldn't be much good in D2, with so many items that could convey the same bonus.

Penetrating Spells
Reduces the resistance of your targets to your spells by 8%. Targets with negative resistance take additional damage from spells.
*Rank: 0/15

Another of the highly-useful passive skills possessed by the Wizard. Sort of a full time Lower Resistance aura, that seems to work with all types of magic.

Tier II
There is no "points in the tree" requirement to start using second tier skills.

Disintegrate
Emanate a beam of pure energy dealing 10 arcane damage per second. Damage is modified by 80% each time the beam passes through the target. Critical hits from arcane damage silence targets for 4 secs.
*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost: 12 per sec.

A laser beam of molten pwnage, Disintegrate would be at its full effect when taking down line formations of enemies. It'll cut through targets without mercy; however, each target will decrease the rest of the beam's damage by 80%, allowing the beam to reach through a total of five creatures before its damage is fully mitigated.

Damage ticks every second of use, and critical strikes (as with any Arcane Spell) will silence the target for 4 seconds. In the screenshot to the left, you can see an example of Disintegrate being used to take down the structural bearings of a wall, crushing the unfortunate skeletons in its path.

In the Blizzcon demo build, this spell wasn't very useful against large enemies, but was devastating against smaller enemies, especially ranged attackers such as skeletal archers. The disintegrate ray hits anything on the screen more or less instantaneously, so nothing is out of reach and there's no delay between clicking the mouse and hitting the enemy with the spell. This one will surely be nerfed somewhat before the final game.

Wave of Force
Project a wave of force outwards, repelling enemies and projectiles and dealing 1-8 damage.
*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost: 25

Wave of Force is seen two times in the Wizard Trailer released at Blizzcon 2008. The first is used in a room of skeletons -- it does little damage to the skeletons, but blasts all the destructibles in the room to glorious pieces. In the second example, the Wizard uses it while slowing down time, waiting for a group of skeletons' projectiles to come close, and then reflecting them back toward them.

It's hard to know how many scenarios in a fast-paced game like this where you could really benefit from using Slow Time and then Wave of Force to repel projectiles -- Out of the 8 projectiles in the above screenshot, only one or two actually came back to strike their targets. It will be interesting to see what practical uses there are for this spell as more gameplay videos unfold.

Arcane Armor
While your Storm Armor, Stone Armor, Stone Skin or Temporal Armor spells are active, your armor is increased by 20%.
*Rank: 0/15

Another interesting mastery; this one boosts the armor, but only while one (or more) of the other protective spells are active.

Arcane Weakness
Enemies damaged by your arcane spells are affected with arcane weakness, increasing damage taken by 10% for 5 sec.
*Rank: 0/15

This would presumably stack with other passives that increase the damage and critical hit % of individual spell types, or all spells in general. Bang.

Arcane Speed
Reduces the cooldown of all arcane spells by 5%.
*Rank: 0/15

Arcane spell damage seems to be limited by a cooldown time on most of the spells, hence this spell.

Tier III
The wizard must spend 10 points in the first two tiers of this tree before he may add points to any spells in Tier 3.

Arcane Orb
* Description: "An orb of pure energy explodes on contact dealing 12-16 arcane damage to all enemies in the blast area. Critical hits from arcane damage silence targets for 4 sec."
*Rank: 1/1
*Mana cost: 18.

A glowing orb of energy travels about 10 yards, before bursting in a nova of destruction. The spell looks something like the D2 Sorc's Frozen Orb, but without the spray of ice spears as it flies across the room. The spell only allowed one point in the BlizzCon demo, but the final game will surely allow more than 1 level (rank) to be added to it.

Slow Time
* Description: Warp space and time, slowing nearby monsters and projectiles. Enemy attack cooldown increase: 1 sec.
*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost: 20

Slow time creates a bubble that surrounds the Wizard. Any enemies or enemy projectiles that enter the bubble are greatly slowed. The wizard, her spell projectiles, and her allies are not affected by the slow time bubble, giving them a huge advantage over the greatly slowed enemies. The bubble remains where it was cast, persisting for several seconds, but the Wizard can move as soon as the spell is cast, though if she moves outside the bubble monster may again target her without their shots or attacks being slowed.

It's assumed that some boss monsters (and their projectiles?) will be immune to the slowing effect, but this is not yet known, and is subject to further balancing anyway.

Arcane Distortion
Enemies damaged by your arcane spells are slowed by 35% for 3 sec.
*Rank: 0/15

There are a lot of interesting ways to slow or freeze or stun monsters in D3. Types of damage, critical hits, spells, masteries to spells, and more.

Mana Recovery
Enemies have a 7% chance to drop a mana globe that return 25% of maximum mana when picked up.
*Rank: 0/15

No mana globes were dropping during the Blizzcon 2008 demo. It's not clear if they were not enabled, if they don't drop early in the game, or if they never drop at all, unless this spell (or others with a similar effect, or perhaps the bonus comes from equipment as well?) is active.

Improved Magic Missile
Increases the number of missiles launched by your magic missile spell by 1 and increases their damage by 8%.
*Rank: 0/15

Boosts the number and damage of magic missiles. It's not known how this spell interacts with the basic magic missile spell. That one seems to set the base damage, which this one enhances.

Tier IV
A wizard must invest 15 points into the skill tree before he may put points into any skills in this tier.

Temporal Armor
Surrounds the wizard in a protective shell that stops all damage from an attack every 6 sec. The shell dissipates after absorbing 12 attacks.
*Rank: 0/1

An interesting variation on spell shields. Rather than absorbing X amount of damage, or some % of damage, this one akes out 100% of the damage, but only works every 6 seconds.

Teleport
Teleport to the selected location up to 40 feet away.
*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost: 23

Teleport has been modified somewhat in D3. Rather than blinking instantly between locations, the Wizard leaps several yards straight up into the air, then falls back down when she arrives at her target point. This makes the movement considerably slower, though it's still very fast.

In one of the BlizzCon 2008 panels, Teleport was demonstrated with a strike rune socketed in it, and the spell added damage to all monsters in the area, each time the Wizard teleported.

Greater Mana
Increases maximum mana by 12%.
*Rank: 0/15

Mana Burst
Increases the damage of any spellcast from full mana by 25%.
*Rank: 0/15

Another creative spell. This one basically lets the Wizard deal substantial extra damage, but with just one spell, once in a while. A wizard who invested in this spell woulc have to modify her play style considerably; trying to use spells sparingly to remain full of mana, in order to score the huge damage hit possible with points in this skill.

Runic Might
Increases the effects of all runes.
*Rank: 0/5

A mysterious, all purpose skill description for this one. It sounds like it exists only in concept at this point, and hasn't been balanced at all, yet.

Conjuring Skill Tree
Tier I Skills (0 points requirement)
Spectral Blade
Summons a spectral blade that strikes each enemy in front of the wizard 3 times causing 1-5 physical damage with each hit.

*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost: 7.

Spell Speed
Increases the speed of your magic missile projectiles by 16%.

*Rank: 0/15
*Next Rank: Increase speed by 24%

Damage Resistance
Increases armor by 10% and all resistances by 8%

*Rank: 0/15
*Next Rank: Increase armor by 15% and all resistances by 12

Tier II Skills (5 points requirement)
Stone Skin
Shield yourself with rock and stone absorbing 30 damage.
*Rank: 0/1
*Duration: 8 seconds
*Mana cost: 12
*Cooldown: 15 seconds

Mirror Image
Create an illusionary duplicate of yourself.
*Rank: 0/1
*Duration: 8 seconds
*Mana Cost: 18

Conjured Armor
Magical armor surrounds the wizard increasing block chance by 2%.
*Rank: 0/15

Conjured Health
Increases total health by 8% and the health of your conjured images by 12%.
*Rank: 0/15

Weapon Mastery
Increases physical damage done by all weapons by 15.
*Rank: 0/15

Tier III Skills (10 points requirement)
Duplicate Conjuring
Increases the images from your mirror image skill and Hydras from your Hydra skill by 1.
*Rank: 0/15

Meteor Storm
Meteorites pelt the targeted region dealing 10 to 20 damage per second.
*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost: 12 mana per second

Acid Cloud
Drop a cloud of acid on the targeted area. Deals an initial 1-4 poison damage followed by 4-8 poison damage per sec to enemies who remain in the area.
*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost: 15

Conjured Power
Increases damage done by spells by 1% for every 10 points of vitality.
*Rank: 0/15

Conjuring Duration
Increases the duration of your Stone Skin and Acid Cloud spells by 1 sec and duration of your mirror image images by 2 sec.
*Rank: 0/15:

Improved Spectral Blade
Increases the damage of Spectral Blade by 14%.
*Rank: 0/15

Tier IV Skills (15 points requirement)
Hydra
Creates a multi-headed beast that attacks your enemies with bolts of fire.
*Rank: 0/1

Magic Weapon
Imbue your weapon with magical energy granting it increased damage.
*Rank: 0/1
*Mana cost: 15

Magical Impact
Increases damage of all spells by 15% of your weapon damage.
*Rank: 0/15

Slowing Strikes
Enemies damaged by your melee attacks, Spectral Blade or magic weapon have their movement speed reduced by 30% and their attack speed reduced by 20% for 4 sec.
*Rank: 0/15

Armor Piercing
Conjured and physical damage decreases the armor of armored enemies.
*Rank: 0/15

Zero80: /* Skill Tree */

A simple listing of the known Barbarian skills, as seen on Blizzard's site and in the WWI gameplay movie.

Skill Tree
Berserker <br>
Battlemaster <br>
Juggernaut

Combat Skills
Hammer of the Ancients
This massive damage attack is dealt with an overhead slam; the Barbarian brings his weapon down straight overhead, like a man driving a railroad spike with a sledgehammer. The Barbarian's weapon vanishes when he uses this skill, the graphic replaced by a giant golden mace.

It's a huge attack, and hits quickly, but the Barbarian takes a second to recover after the strike, leaving him vulnerable to nearby enemies. This looks like a skill that's best used against single large targets, rather than while swarmed. It's not clear if the strike will hit multiple enemies, or just the one targeted.

The skill's hover text was shown in the WWI game play movie, and it's reproduced in the table below.

Hammer of the Ancients.

Rank: 4/5<br>
A massive attack that has increased chance to critically hit.<br>
Stamina: 16<br>
Deals 225% weapon damage plus an additional 14 physical damage.<br>
25% chance to critical hit

Cleave
A slashing melee strike that can hit multiple targets at once, Cleave leaves a streak of bright red light behind. It is a fast hit but has a slight delay between uses, making it slightly slower than normal attack.

Cleave can be delivered with one hand, seems to alternate forehand and backhand when used repeated with a single weapon, and can be used while dual wielding.

Common sense would suggest that it boosts damage and attack rating, but details are not yet known.

Furious Charge
A dashing attack that works almost like teleportation. The barbarian targets an enemy and dashes at them at a very high rate of speed. He deals damage to targets he passes through on the way, and deals huge explosive damage to anything near his terminal point.

It's not yet clear what "Fury" means in the Barbarian's skill descriptions, but it seems to be some sort of value that skills expend, possibly related to Rage in World of Warcraft, which goes up when a Warrior attacks or uses certain skills, goes down over time rather than up, and is required for most skills in the place of Mana, which Warriors don't have. It's not related to the Barbarian skill "Frenzy" in Diablo II.

Furious Charge
Rank: 1/1<br>
Charge directly at an enemy, smashing everything in the way.<br>
Current level: 1<br>
Fury: 20<br>
Seismic Slam
The barbarian lifts up one foot and brings it down with her weapon, slamming them into the ground and sending a wave of energy forward, dealing heavy damage to anything directly in front of her. Multiple monsters can be hit by each use, and the ground is torn and fractured by this skill.

During the WWI 2008 Denizens of Diablo panel, The D3 team spoke at length about the creation of this essential skill, and how it was used to focus the design of the character.

:This is a skill where the Barbarian raises his weapon overhead and slams it down into the ground. Anything in front of him, in a sort of cone-shape, gets rocked and destroyed. This skill was first skill we made for Barb, and one of the first we did in the game. Getting it right took longer than it did with most skills. We did many iterations. Animation especially. Had to make barb feel physically powerful. Traditionally we associate big bold movements with power. But if you want a game that feels fast and responsive, you want the movements to be really fast. Getting balance of fast movements and powerful feel. It's a big challenge in many ways to get that animation right.

:Once we got through all that, we didn't still didn't really like the skill. We got programming done and wasn't that great. Got effects done, and still not that great. Somehow didn't quite sing to us. Wasn't until we got sound that it was really awesome. Really fun. Key to that was faith to get through process. Once you do get through it, all the skills that come after that come much quicker. What's the Barbarian about? Look at Seismic Slam. With that he rocks the world with power. Next few skills we did almost required no communication between art and programming, since art knew what the barb was about. Knew what we were designing for, since we had a great example.

Leap
This skill enables the barbarian to leap a considerable distance, and quite quickly too. When landing the barbarian drives down her weapons from overhead, creating a blue shockwave that damages and knocks back any enemies within several yards. It appears to combine the powers of the d2 skills leap and leap attack, and seems to deal quite a bit of damage, as rapidly as it dispatches multiple ghouls with every Leap, in the WWI movie.

At one point the barbarian uses it without traveling any distance, leaping straight up and then coming back down with explosive force, so it appears to be a skill that can be targeted right at the monster you are currently facing.

Whirlwind
Everyone's favorite spinning, multi-hitting tornado of a skill returns in D3. As it did in D2, Whirlwind lands multiple, bonus damage hits to anything in the barbarian's path, and it can strike multiple monsters per use. It appears to be usable as long as you wish (mana permitting?) but only in a straight line. To change direction the barbarian must stop one WW, and begin another one.

The whirling graphic is much improved as well, with the weapon visible tracking around in a circle, leaving a glowing light as it spins.

The hover text for Whirlwind was visible in the WWI gameplay movie, and it's reproduced below. It's not yet clear what "Fury" means in the Barbarian's skill descriptions, but it seems to be some sort of value that skills expend, possibly related to Rage in World of Warcraft, which goes up when a Warrior attacks or uses certain skills, goes down over time rather than up, and is required for most skills in the place of Mana, which Warriors don't have; it's not related to the Barbarian skill of that name in Diablo II.

Ground Stomp
This foot stomping skill has a function much like the War Cry skill, from Diablo II. It stuns and renders motionless monsters in a small radius around the barbarian, though it does not seem to deal any damage. Stars can be seen circling around the heads of stunned monsters, and their defense is greatly reduced for the duration of the effect. Skeletal Shieldman, for instance, drop their shields while stunned.

This skill has an impressive and very powerful graphic. The earth trembles when the Barbarian stomps, and glowing yellow lines radiate out from the impact point, like pavement cracking under the weight of a dropped safe.

Warcries
Only two warcries have been seen inaction, thus far. It's possible that Ground Stomp (and other unknown stomping skills?) are forms of warcries, since they seem to have a similar effect.

Battle Cry
This warcry is basically Shout, from Diablo II. It increases the defense of the Barbarian and any party members in range. The defense and duration increase with additional skill points.

The skill hover was shown in the WWI gameplay movie, and that text is reproduced below.

A simple listing of the known Barbarian skills, as seen on Blizzard's site and in the WWI gameplay movie.
