:Were you looking for the Sanctuary Sanctuary rune word?

Sanctuary is the name of the physical realm of man in the Diablo Universe. It is not the only realm, but it is the world in which the Diablo games take place.

Background
Sanctuary was created as a plane of existence to the Nephalem, a race of omni-powerful beings birthed from renegade angel and demons who were tired of the war. The powerful demoness Lilith and the Archangel Inarius were the prime powers behind this, and their offspring were called Nephalem.

The Nephalem could basically bend reality to their whims, significantly more powerful than demons or angels themselves.

When the High Heavens and the Angiris Council found out about Sanctuary, they felt it was an abomination and designated Tyrael to take the Heavenly Host and destroy the entire world. The selfless sacrifice of Uldyssian to save Sanctuary changed Tyrael's mind, and in the end he was the weighing vote to leave Sanctuary unharmed.

He was the last to vote and while both Auriel & Itherael voted for its existence and only Imperius had voted for destruction, had Tyrael voted in favor of Imperius, it's most likely the world had been destroyed, on Imperius' insistence.

The council wiped the memories of all humans, and none now know that Tyrael could have been the one responsible for the undoing of all of humanity.

After the existence of Sanctuary was secured, Tyrael has been ordered by his fellow angels on many occasions not to interfere with the mortal world. He has often disobeyed, fearing that Sanctuary would otherwise fall in the hands of the Burning Hells.

When the Prime Evils were banished from hell during the Dark Exile, Tyrael helped humanity to create the Horadrim and creating the Soulstones they used to imprison Diablo, Mephisto and Baal with, centuries before the events covered in Diablo I and Diablo II.

Locations in Sactuary
For details on all places within Sanctuary, check out the Sanctuary category:
* Sanctuary Category
You can also see the navigation at the bottom of this page for an easy pick.

Magic in Sanctuary
Sanctuary is located on the Physical plane of the fabric of reality, and intermingling with this is the Etheral plane, as some explain it; located "under" the plane of reality. Certain strong-willed individuals are able to harness the spiritual essence of themselves (called "Mana") and use it to channel power from the Etheral realm, creating magical effects in the physical one. Read more in the Magic article:
* Magic in Sanctuary

Sanctuary Languages
As most fantasy worlds, Sanctuary consists of cultures that shares different social traits. For now, the only thing that is known about these is that there is a mutual understanding of languages between the continents, and whether this is due to the fact that people speak multiple languages through their culture, of if there is a "common" language (English) that everyone shares is unknown. Players as well as characters and NPCs in the world travel to either side of the globe, and can still communicate with people.

Names are more socially inspired though, and does show there must be some diversity with languages in the lands. Country names such as "Westmarch", and town names such as "Tristram", has a clear "Western" reference from our world, as does the architecture. Deckard Cain is a character name from a person of the west, while "Abd al-Hazir" is the name of a character from the flourishing East. If everyone shares a "common" language, they still seem to retain their own cultural names.

The only known specifically mentioned language is the Umbaru people's tongue from the Teganze area of the Torajan jungles .

Language/Name Inspiration
This is of course a lot more complex than just saying they speak one of our real world languages, and "inspiration" is the best word here. Blizzard were inspired by these real world languages when they created names or words in the fantasy languages of Sanctuary. Some names have a related meaning, some sound like the related language, and some are completely unrelated:
* Druidic - Irish (seems like a 100% conversion)
* Barbarian - Scandinavian (mostly)
* Kehjistani - Arabic (mostly)
* Umbaru - Aboriginal/African/Haitian/Indian. There are some connections with an Aboriginal "King" who apparently was clairvoyant, and the name is similar to an Indian village, but there's also heavy inspiration from Haitian Voodoo culture.
* Western Kingdoms Tounge - English (mostly)
* Xiansaian - Eastern Asian. Hard to know, since not much information about Xiansai is released, and the clothing seems to have both Chinese and Japanese inspiration.

Sanctuary Calendar
This is a list of known date names and numbers from the Sanctuary Calendar (really the Kehjistani calendar), based on journals made by Deckard Cain and Elder Aust of Harrogath in the years 1265-1266, during the war with the Prime Evils. From Cain's notes, it looks like months are about as long as our own world's, and they obviously have both their own month names as well as week day names.

It is unknown exactly how many days are in a month, how many months there are in a year (but we can make a guess at 12), how many days there are in a week, if weeks/months/years length vary (like Earth's "Leap Year") and many other details. We currently know this:

* There are at least 9 months in the Kehjistani calendar.
* There are at least 28 days in one of the months (Kathon), and 27 in another (Damhar), indicating similar month length to our own earth.
* Kathon is the first month in a year.
* Solmoneth is the second month.
* Montath is the third month.
* Ostara is the fourth month.
* Vasan is the fifth month.
* There is an unknown number of months between Vasan and Jerharan (likely 12 months in a year)
* Jerharan is the fourth last month (likely 9th).
* Damhar is the third last month (likely 10th).
* Ratham is the second last month (likely 11th).
* Esunar is the last month (likely 12th).

At least some of these month names were inspired by names in the real world. "Ostara" is an old Germanic name for Easter, while "Damhair" is the Scottish Gaelic name for October, the tenth month.

Worth noting is also the similarity with Nephalem names: Bul-Kathos (Kathon), Rathma (Ratham), Esu (Esunar), Vasily (Vasan). Perhaps the months, or some of them are named after the Nephalem?

These are the dates we know to exist from the journals of Cain and Aust:

Sanctuary Time
Time of day is given by named hours. We have five examples in Aust's journal. Based on the other time clues in his journal entries, we can guess that the names used correspond to the hours of the same name on Earth, with the exception that Matins and Lauds, which are synonyms on Earth, appear to be different in Sanctuary:

* Lauds - sunrise
* Sext - noon
* Vespers - sunset
* Compline - midnight
* Matins - uncertain, possibly first light of morning

There may be other named hours in the day, or times might be given in forms like "An hour past Lauds" or "Halfway from Lauds to Sext".

Sources
Worth noting is that these two sources would be more or less compatible if it were not for the fact that Aust is talking about events in 1265 and Deckard Cain talks about 1266. As Deckard Cain's Journal is more recently released from Blizzard, it's probably safe to say that this is the "canon" lore.
* Journal of Elder Aust of Harrogath
* Deckard Cain's Journal

Important Events
The only reoccurring event known at this time about sanctuary is the mysterious Night of Souls.

References
* Writings of Abd al-Hazir: Entry no. 0009
* Journal of Elder Aust of Harrogath
* Deckard Cain's Journal
* Diablo II: Lord of Destruction Manual

Footnotes
The names of the hours, like the general pattern of angelic names and a few other details of the world of Sanctuary,
bear striking similarity to elements of Judeochristian religion on Earth but do not quite match under detailed scrutiny.

Trivia
The Aranoch desert on the western continent has a very similar name to another great desert in the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy setting, the Forgotten Realms: Anauroch. Seeing how many Blizzard employees have spent time in the D&D worlds, it's likely the name was inspired by the Anauroch desert, or perhaps a tribute to the great desert of the Forgotten Realms.
Diablo III Character
Tyral has been seen a lot on concept art and on the official webpage for Diablo III, and is very likely to end up as an NPC in the game in some form. There has been debates as to whether he will be good or evil, something we will have to wait and see.

Diablo 3 Theories
Many players believe that Tyrael will be central to the plot of Diablo 3. They claim that he will suffer the repercussions of destroying the Worldstone, and has perhaps even been cast out of heaven in the intermittent 20 years since his wings seem to be smoking he may be also be corrupted and an enemy in the next game . Finally, in a Q&A session a Blizzard Representative said in answer to a question on The High Heavens and Tyrael:

<blockquote> "We are not going to reveal any details about that but I can say we do address a lot of the issues that you’re talking about. I can extrapolate that the high heavens aren’t very pleased about his actions. I probably shouldn’t say any more." </blockquote>

The official website line is that Tyrael has been missing for the last 20 years, and nobody has heard anything about him.

Personality
The personality of Tyrael is known to only a very few. We know he is a man of great justice, compassion and hatred of demons, and he has a special interest in Sanctuary as well as humanity.

Since he was close to destroying Sanctuary himself, originally, it's clear he's not afraid to take action against what he considers a threat to the High Heavens.

Background
Sanctuary
When the Angiris Council first discovered Sanctuary, Tyrael was designated to lead Heaven's forces in destroying the "abomination". This was Imperius' view, one Tyrael sympathised with, since the whole existence of sanctuary comes from a defiled union of angels and demons.

When Tyrael witnessed Uldyssian sacrificing himself for the world of sanctuary he had a change of heart, and took the deciding vote within the council to save Sanctuary from destruction.

The council wiped the memories of all humans, and none now know that Tyrael could have been the one responsible for the undoing of all of humanity.

The Horadrim
After the existence of Sanctuary was secured, Tyrael has been ordered by his fellow angels on many occasions not to interfere with the mortal world. He has often disobeyed, fearing that Sanctuary would otherwise fall in the hands of the Burning Hells.

When the Prime Evils later were banished from hell during the Dark Exile, Tyrael helped humanity to create the Horadrim and creating the Soulstones they used to imprison Diablo, Mephisto and Baal with, centuries before the events covered in Diablo I and Diablo II.

He also helped the Horadrim to seal the essence of Baal in the body of Tal Rasha.

The Worldstone
Tyrael was captured by Baal after he failed to stop Diablo from releasing Baal but was eventually freed by the adventurers of Diablo II. He returned to the adventurers in the Pandemonium Fortress, the last bastion before Hell, to offer some assistance.

When Diablo was defeated and the adventurers had caught up with Baal to slay him, Tyrael made it clear that Baal had permanently corrupted the Worldstone. He decided that the only thing he could do to protect Sanctuary was to destroy the sacred relic.

The destruction left the massive Mount Arreat as nothing more than a crater, and dealt a devastating blow to the Barbarian tribes, who saw it as their life duty to protect the Worldstone.

The Barbarian tribe leader Anya considers the destruction and tells us in her valediction that this action was never foreseen in the prophecies.

Speculation: Tyrael's Agenda
Tyrael has appeared to humans in many other times and locations to assist the humans in the fight against the demonic forces. Amongst players there is much speculation as to Tyrael's real agenda, but in the game all of the NPCs seem to hold him in the highest esteem.

However, the speculation includes notions such as Tyrael in fact caring nothing for humans, and the destruction of the Worldstone is for some devious purpose. Seen from a certain light, it seems strange he first supplied Soulstones to the Horadrim, only to ask the heroes to destroy them a few hundred years later. What implications will the destruction of the Worldstone have on Sanctuary and how do we know it really was corrupted beyond salvation? Baal had not spent THAT much time in the chamber, and was the stone really so easy to corrupt?

Friends
As with his personality, it's hard to know if Tyrael ever had any human friends, but if he did, Tal Rasha would likely be part of those, as would Deckard Cain and the heroes who helped defeat the Prime Evils.

Foes
More than anything, Tyrael opposes the Burning Hells and demonkind. If this is his only motivation for helping humans on Sanctuary, or if he perhaps is using the human world as a battlefield against Hell is unknown.

<!--
Other Related People
List anyone not included in friends/foes. Not limited to interactions in the games, but include books as well as rumours, but make sure rumours are marked as such.
Previous Appearances
Tyrael is seen in three places in Diablo II. The first is at the end of Act Two, when he greets the player from the island where Baal/Tal Rasha had been imprisoned. The second meeting comes in the Pandemonium Fortress, the town of Act Four, where Tyrael interacts with characters like any other NPC, though of course he's a bit less chatty.

He is not a merchant, but he can resurrect dead mercs, for the usual price. What Tyrael does with the gold is an eternal question and running joke for many players. The third sighting of Tyrael comes at the end of Act Five, when he descends from above after Baal's defeat in the Worldstone Chamber.

After a speech in which he asserts that Baal has poisoned the Worldstone and that it will no longer function to keep most of the forces of Heaven and Hell from flooding into the mortal world, Tyrael creates a portal for the human heroes to leave.

After their departure, Tyrael hurls his sword into the Worldstone, causing it to shatter into countless millions of pieces, and its this explosion and apparent doom for humanity that fills the final cinematic of Diablo II.
