Achievements are a sort of mini-game tied to Blizzard games when played over Battle.net. Players must complete various tasks above and beyond the basic game requirements to earn achievements, which are then displayed on a player's Battle.net account.

No concrete details have yet been revealed about Achievements in Diablo III, beyond the fact that the team is definitely going to include them.


Achievement Plans

Jay Wilson spoke about Achievements from Gamescom, in August, 2010:[1]

in.Diablo.d3: Are we going to see achievements in Diablo III? For example, kill one million Fallen Ones with a single swipe, finish the whole game with a naked hardcore character, listen to every single Deckard Cain dialogue?
Jay Wilson: *smiles* Those are very good achievement ideas. We’ll have them in D3, but I don’t think kill one million anything in one blow. Or ever. Those aren’t good; those are grindy. I do like the naked hardcore character completing the whole game though. I’m all over that one.


Cross-Character Achievements

As far as the e-peen meter goes for showing off a higher level character, we think a proper achievement system is much better at this. There’s more variety, they’re more interesting and compelling for people to work toward. One important point of note is that our achievements are cross-character, meaning we can give achievements for things like leveling 5, 10... hell, 20 characters to 60. Certainly a bigger feat than a level 99, and we can give tangible rewards for it too.

Projected Achievements

Very few specifics are yet released about the system, but looking at WoW and StarCraft II, which already have Achievements in them, logical ones would be like:

  • Achievement for defeating each boss on each difficulty.
  • Killing 1 of a specific monster type.
  • Killing 100 of a specific monster type.
  • Killing 1000 of a specific monster type. (etc)
  • Completing your first quest.
  • Completing all normal quests in an Act.
  • Completing 10 quests.
  • Completing 100 quests.
  • Completing all available random quests in an Act.
  • Completing one specific quest within a time limit.
  • Getting a Massacre bonus of 10 monsters.
  • Getting a Massacre bonus of 20 monsters. (etc)
  • Killing 10 monsters within 3 seconds.
  • Killing a monster when you have less than 5% health left.
  • Killing a monster when ally had less than 5% health left.

Each Achievement would be worth a certain amount of Achievement Points, which would be totalled on your Battle.net account, and be visible through an interface in the game. These could of course only be accumulated when playing online, so Blizzard can make sure you're not hacking the game etc.

When a player get certain important achievements, or get a certain number of Achievement Points they could unlock things like special titles, items (generally items that do not affect actual gameplay) or ways to change your appearance, or increasing the number of avatars you can choose from in the Battle.net chat rooms.

Fans have had a lot of fun inventing potential Diablo III achievements as well.


"Blizzard Level" Achievement

The Diablo 3 Achievement system will be an account-based system tied to a player's Blizzard Account ID, the purpose of which is to track achievements of all three major games: World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3. When combining all the games together, a score dubbed "Blizzard Level" is gained.
